Family Camp Unites New Waldemar Families

On April 25-27, 165 people including 70 new Short Term campers, spent a very busy weekend full of fun and friendships at Waldemar Family Camp.

Jill and her archery staff taught many "campers" both young and old, how to aim for the bullseye while Liz Pohl and her department led eight trail rides and two pony rides! New this year was a hay ride to the tree house to eat watermelon and decorate authentic horse shoes. Families canoed, paddle boated, fished, swam, and took an exhilarating ride down the water slide! Other adventures included arrowhead knapping, tennis, basketball, hiking, ceramics, kickball, and of course, enjoying all of Johnny's yummy creations!

There was even entertainment each evening. Friday night featured music by Brian Strange and his sons playing the harmonica and mandolin. Saturday night was a camper talent show with performances ranging from Hannah Montana impersonations to hula-hooping. Awards were given throughout the weekend for everything from the "Most Enthusiastic Family" to the "Most Outlandish Basketball Shot." Sunday concluded with a family chapel service held by the river in Tejas Chapel and brunch for all!

Thanks to all who helped make the weekend a success! We can't wait to see our new campers again in a few weeks and look forward to Family Camp 2009!

Construction Continues

Work on the beautiful new Round-Up Lodge is complete! Campers will be able to enjoy another meeting space (with air-conditioning!) this summer for classes, tribal meetings, and senior movies. We think you will love the view of the river from above the Rippling Waters garage.

Meanwhile, construction on the new office continues to progress. We will not be ready to move in by the time camp starts so our temporary office for the summer will be set up in Rippling Waters.

Buzzard Reunion 2008 Soared with Fun and Fellowship

Veteran counselors and new recruits alike gathered in January for a weekend of playing and planning in preparation for the summer camp sessions. Despite the bitter cold, we enjoyed delicious Johnny treats as well as laughs around the fire while brainstorming ways to continually improve our summer experience. In 2007 this group created the "Newspaper Style Show" that intermediates enjoyed during our summer terms. I think campers and counselors alike will agree that it was a hit and will look forward to new activities and programs generated from this year's meeting.
